Zuuuuuuuumba!

Time for a much needed post about my current Group Ex obsession, ZUMBA!

So, you walk into your local gym…peer in the studio, and see people from wall to wall dancing like maniacs to awesome music and sweating like there is some sort of an indoor shower on.  This is a workout?!?!?   You bet.

What exactly IS Zumba?

ZUMBA FITNESS®. MOVING THE WORLD TO A NEW BEAT.
Are you ready to party yourself into shape? That’s exactly what the Zumba® program is all about. It’s an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that’s moving millions of people toward joy and health.

Who We Are

Zumba Fitness® is the only Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends red-hot international music, created by Grammy Award-winning producers, and contagious steps to form a “fitness-party” that is downright addictive.

Since its inception in 2001, Zumba Fitness has grown to become the world’s largest – and most successful – dance-fitness program with more than 10 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in over 90,000 locations across more than 110 countries.

I, like many other people, was very skeptical of this class.  From personal experience of being an outright clutz….I was worried that my two left feet would leave me feeling overwhelmed, off beat, and embarrassed.  That being said, you have to suck it up…and GO!  Zumba, like any other workout class, can seem completely overwhelming and scary.  Sure, you may not know the moves right away…but I can almost guarantee that you won’t be in it alone.   I felt totally out of place and un-coordinated the first time I took a Zumba class.  The next time was a little better, the next…slightly better…etc.  Point is, the more you come back, the more you actually LEARN the moves.

There are songs now that I actually *know* and look forward to.  That is a great feeling!

Aside from dancing like a fool and having a downright blast…I leave COVERED in sweat.  This is a workout like no other.  This uses the entire body.  After your first class, let me know how those calves are feeling when you wake up.  Mine felt like I had been walking on tip toes for 2 1/2 weeks. Oucccccccch (in a good way!)

So lets get right to the nitty gritty.

Lets start with my personal favorite.  Not really sure WHY I am obsessed with this song, but I get downright gitty when I hear this one starting…

Check out these other fun songs!

(I’m a big fan of the “octopus arms” in that one)

Fun, right?!?!

You need to try this class.  All instructors are different, with various styles and music choices.  Our instructor, Holly, also choreographs alot of her own moves to current songs (of which we couldn’t upload, sorry guys!) but trust me when I say….you will feel like you are breaking it down…club style.

Now lets get to the best part…the calorie burn!

The “average” person can burn up to 500-800 calories in an hour of Zumba (!!)  Sweet!

One other important aspect I want to talk about is shoe selection.  The first couple of times I mistakingly wore my ultra stiff running shoes to Zumba.  Now, while these shoes are great for running, they were not so good for all the lateral movements required for shaking my groove thing.

Straight from the Zumba site.

What are the best shoes to wear in a Zumba class?

Zumba Fitness recommends that you wear “cross training” or “aerobic” style shoes. They provide the cushion and medial lateral support needed for side-to-side movements. They also have low traction rubber for easy sliding and turning. Please be careful with “running shoes” since they use a heavy tread on the bottom and are designed for forward movement.

So now it’s time to find a class, and shake your groove thing.

If you have questions, ask away!  I will try my best to answer or find someone who can.

Ahhh, Saturday!

Happy Saturday folks!

How is everyones weekend thus far?  Mine is peachy.  I am currenty sitting at Panera….do you think I have enough stuff spread out?

Just came from the Y-taught RIPPED (all weight class) and had a great turnout!  Burned out some shoulders today, and I am already feeling it!

I wanted SO bad to get Zumba pics/vids last night but my Flip cam was acting up!  Depression!  Managed to get a shot of Holly teaching the Dance Central class which is a Zumba style class for the kiddos.  Can you say adorable?

When it was the adults turn…we shook it.  And shook it.  And shook it.  I also got to lead my favvvvvvorite song with Holly in a dance off!  Eeeeek!  It was alot of fun though!

Check out the duds…

Bracelet of the century?  I think so.

If you have not tried Zumba.  Stop reading this blog right now, go find a class……and GO.  Go ahead.  I’ll wait.

….

….

….

See.  Wasnt that fun?!?!

In all seriousness Zumba is an amazing Latin dance inspired cardio workout that will leave you DRENCHED in sweat.  Our instructor choreographs all of her own moves, and also does alot of hip hop style dances.  It is absolutely awesome!

My friend Sharon was there last night, and had NEVER tried Veggie booty.  Luckily I keep a stash in my office.  I always have to be spreading the word about my Veggie Booty!  It is my drug of choice! 😛

I think I hooked another person on the booty!  Have you guys tried it?  Thoughts?

After Zumba I came home, and collapsed.  Can we talk briefly about odd cravings?  Being that Zumba was so late, I didn’t necessarily get to eat dinner (I know, I know…but I was so tired!)  This however, left me waking up at 2am STARVING.  I don’t know why it seemed appealing…but this is what I went for:

Pears?  Really?!?!  My body is so weird at times.

So fast forwarding past the 2am pears, got up to teach RIPPED this morning, then quickly downed my protein shake…

And some coconut water, which you MUST read about here.

And now here I sit!  Since technically the shake was my breakfast post class (I cannot eat before a class, my stomach goes crazy!) I am enjoying a nice brunch @ Panera…while reading up on GaGa in the latest Vogue…

Jalapeno Bagel with Veggie Cream Cheese anyone?!

Pure, carby, goodness.

This should be more than enough to get me through the day!

I am going to a wedding tonight and need a fancy outfit.  Coming from the guy who wears workout clothes to WORK, I am obviously a little behind in the dressing up department.  Any tips on what to wear??? I’m going to hit the mall on the way home and see if anything strikes me.  I hate dressing up, but weddings mean one thing….CAKE.  For that, I am willing to wear anything. 🙂

I also foresee a nap in my future.  Exciting, eh?  Have a great Saturday guys!  ❤

Guess Who’s An Uncle?

ME!

Ok, well not in the technical sense of the word….but my Kim (friend/workout buddy/co-worker/fellow icing enthusiast) finally had her baby!  Blog world, meet Emma…

Yep.  She is the cutest baby on the planet.  Contest is OVER.  Thanks to those of you who lost. 😉

I.  Want.  One.        Heck, I want 14!  *sigh*  Someday!

In between baby craziness I was somehow able to fit in lunch today at my favorite local spot…

Now, aside from AMAZING pizza…this place has the greatest salad bar known to mankind.

I loooove their lettuce.  It isn’t your traditional ice berg lettuce (puke) like most places.  This is the real deal!  I make my salad the same every time I come, and pile it as high as the bowl will hold…

Fresh mozz, navy beans, cranberries, and peas.  Recipe for deliciousness!

Gotta love a salad the size of a small car.  🙂

You may be seeing alot of these pics, I am pretty sure I should own stock in the company the amount of salads/pizza I have consumed from this place.

Zumba tonight was an epic FAIL!  We got 25 minutes into class and the stereo failed!!!!!  Ugh.  I promise, on Friday there will be pics and video.  Holly has decided to do a Zumba battle and split up the class half and half.  She wants me to LEAD one half of the class.  Can you say Oh Em Gee?!?!? hahah  This could be disastrous…so definitely stay tuned.

Dinner was simple, as I opened my freezer and got just the inspiration I was lacking…

Kashi to the rescue when I am being lazy for dinner!  Paired it with my favorite extra lean turkey sausage….  (extra crispy, of course!)

And a drizzle of syrup!  Check it outtttt…

Gotta love some breakfast for dinner!

Topped off with a spoonful of peanut butter goodness for desert.

I TBSP Natural PB + Chocolate Chunks = heaven in my mouth.  Justtttt Sayin’.

To close tonight….Steph, the bff and fellow pizza companion:

Back To Normal!

Sickness = defeated.

I refused to be sick anymore.  😉  Feeling tons better, thanks for all the well wishes!  I think it was just allergy related….and with a little…..ok….a TON of sleep, I am back to normal!

Sorry for the lack of update yesterday.  I really just need a good ole fashioned re-charge type of day.  Came home from spin and immediately started working on breakfast, only so I could eat…and crawl back in bed. 😉  Finally tackled this beast:

I have been putting these off because I never seem to have time to wait for the *30* minutes they require to cook.  Teri blogged about them recently, and I decided that it was the day to give them a go!

Got the Almond Milk heated while I prepped the oats. Check these bad boys out!

While they cooked (foh-evah), I watched my TIVO’d Survivor.  This season is ABSOLUTELY insane.  Tonight’s Tribal Council was the wildest I have ever seen in all the seasons!  CRAZY!  Anyone out there watch Survivor anymore, or am I the lone one?!

After 30 minutes….the oats/almond milk had turned into this:

(See all my little Chia guys floating around in there?!?  Check out more about these seeds of wonder, here.  They are a great addition to oatmeal, smoothies, and cereal!)

Went simple with these guys, and topped with a big dollop of Almond Butter.

I am digging these!!!  Totally nutty, and super creamy!  Definitely won’t have time to make them everyday, but the days I do…I am going to take full advantage of it!  Yum!

Literally after breakfast/Survivor….I collapsed into a 6 hour mini sleep session.  Exactly what I needed, because I woke up without the crud/sore throat/annoying cough!  Thank you body, for making it a quick and semi painless sick time.

When I woke up from my comatose state…Kim had text and wanted to go to Body Pump and Zumba at our other gym.  Hearrrrrrt Body Pump, so that was a no brainer.  Zumba on the other hand had always intrigued me…just never made it to one.  Feeling refreshed and ready to roll…I agreed to both!

Check out this cheese fest to get a somewhat reasonable idea on what Body Pump consists of:

Headed to meet Kimmy for some Iron Pumpin’, Latin Dancin’ good time!

Check out those slanted risers in the background.  They make things fun!

This round of Body Pump is KILLER!  Our gym rotates it’s routines every three months, and this one was particularly grueling.  Awesome music though.

Soon it was time for Zumba.  I had NO idea what to expect.  For starters it was packed to the BRIM!  We could barely move.  And trust me when I say that in this class….moving was a MUST!  I had a blast!!!!  She combined latin-inspired moves with plyometric jumps, all to counts of music…which luckily came in handy for me.  As an instructor I think I have music counts embedded in my brain.

Zumba will most certainly become a new class in my line-up!  (whenever I can fit it in!) 😉

After Zumba, Kimmy had to leave…but my favorites Russell and Emily came walking in.  How could I leave those two???  😉

Don’t you love how a “rest” day turned out to include Spin, Body Pump, Zumba, and a 4 miler with Emily?!?!

Even though we are both semi-injured (knee issues) we were able to do the 4 miler relatively pain free.  We took it slow, jogged outside…and chatted the entire way.  It was nice.  I miss Emily SO much during the week.  Darn her full time job.  I am trying to think of someway to steal her away throughout the week.  Any thoughts?

Right before the run I managed to inhale a new flavor of Clif:

Apricots = Yum.  Clif Bars = Yum.  Apricot Clif Bars….not so much.  The bar was just too “fruity”.  Not my fav.

What better way to counteract that then a delicious dinner with friends?!

Normally at this place, “Mega Veggie” is my go-to pizza.  This time, however, another pie caught my eye.  “Hot Potato Pizza” anyone?!?!

Cheesy.

Potato.

Goodness.

I literally had to immediately box up half of this beast so I didn’t eat the entire thing.  It was THAT good.  I subbed the bacon, and got tofu instead.  YUMMY!

Dearest Mellow Mushroom,

Thank you for allowing me to experience potato on a pizza.  I heart you.

-Tyler

What better to follow up potato pizza than some Italian Ice?!?!

Ice Custard Happiness is right!

I got the “Gelati” which is ice on the bottom, and custard on top.  Kids size with PEEP (you heard me right) ice/S’more Ice, and chocolate custard.  Get the drool rags out.

Take a second.

Imagine a Peep.

Now imagine a S’more.

NOW imagine them together…in ice form…TOPPED with chocolate custard.

BAM!

How bout them apples?!?!

Well….it was an interesting end to the week.  I was sick…recovered…Zumba’d (thought about my girl, Gina, the entire time!), had potato pizza…and an amazing dessert.  Good Friday in my books.

Saturday includes teaching Weekend Warrior…Spin…and then working the front desk until 6:00.  Joy.  😉

How is everyones weekend?!?!  What are your experiences with Zumba?  Did you pink puffy heart it as much as I did/do?
